Day 1 - Sayer

The first day of the Advanced Woodworking A-term was about as expected, it was a day primarily based on planning and drawing out blueprints for what our builds were going to look like. My personal project was going to be a weapons storage shelf. Specifically a medieval weapons storage shelf. The reason why I would ever need such a niche item is rather simple, I collect medieval weapons and would like a place to store such weapons, as currently they are just sorta leaning against my closet wall. This was the inherent concept that inspired my design. The last time I was in a woodworking class it was design tech in sophomore year, where I designed a holder for my greatsword, however that holder was kinda... bad. It was made of unstained, unsanded plywood held together by screws and wasn't even the right length, so I'm replacing it.

Now this shelf was going to serve 2 purposes, storage and display. I wanted to make sure that it served a functional purpose while simultaneously also allowing me to easily brag about the weapons I had. I already had a design in my head but after a few hours of designing and working on it with Mr Grisbee, I had a finalized rough blueprint and measurements for most of my cuts and the placements of certain bits that I could use. I began work on the full cut list and started to draw out a design for the two greatsword holders that I was going to place on top of the rather standard shelf structure. I was going to put in the effort to make the two holders look pretty good overall. If I finish this project early I'll probably burn some designs into the side of the wood if I am able to, that sounds like a good use of time to help put the finishing touches on this. I finished off the first day of planning with a finalized blueprint, a proper cut list, and a design for the topmost holders. I do hope that this project goes along smoothly in the future.
